Mazie knows that individuals, not politicians, should be the ones making decisions about our bodies and our lives. That’s why she’s fighting to block Republicans’ efforts to ban abortion nationwide and protect reproductive freedom across the country. Following the Supreme Court’s disastrous Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade, Mazie introduced legislation to codify Roe and protect access to reproductive care. She’s also leading the effort to protect the right to contraception and working to protect access to IVF. As Republicans continue their crusade to rollback our bodily autonomy, Mazie continues fighting to defend Americans’ fundamental right to make decisions about their bodies and their lives.
The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy. That’s why Mazie is fighting to protect our democracy from Donald Trump and his MAGA allies, and protect the sacred right of every American to make their voices heard in our elections. From championing the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, to calling for an enforceable ethical code for Supreme Court Justices and more, Mazie is fighting to strengthen our democracy and uphold the rule of law. She’s also helped to confirm more than 200 federal judges under President Biden, helping to bring important personal and professional diversity to our federal courts.
Health care is a human right, and Mazie is fighting to make sure everyone can get the care they need to stay healthy. She helped pass the Inflation Reduction Act, which capped prescription drug costs for people on Medicare, capped the cost of insulin for Medicare beneficiaries at $35 a month, and allowed Medicare to negotiate drug prices for the first time. The IRA also included Mazie’s bill to ensure our kupuna can get the vaccinations they need free of cost to protect against diseases like shingles and COVID. She’s helped to protect the Affordable Care Act from Republicans’ nonstop attacks and she’ll continue fighting to make health care affordable and accessible to all Americans.
Mazie’s working to lower the cost of living and make life more affordable for families in Hawaii. She helped pass the Inflation Reduction Act, Democrats’ bill to combat inflation and invest in our communities. She’s also introduced legislation to lower the cost of child care so that no family is paying more than 7% of their income on child care costs. While Republicans threaten to slash critical safety net program, Mazie is fighting to protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare, to help ensure our kupuna receive the support they deserve.
As the consequences of climate change impact communities across Hawaii, Mazie is fighting to protect our environment. She has championed legislation to safeguard Hawaii’s fish, wildlife, and plants, and supported the state’s goal to transition to clean, renewable energy by 2045. She also helped pass the Inflation Reduction Act, which contains the biggest investment in combating climate change in our nation’s history–delivering billions for green energy infrastructure, community resilience, and more. From securing funding for green-energy research to repopulating native plants, Mazie is working to strengthen our climate resilience and preserve Hawaii’s unique biodiversity for generations to come.
Mazie is committed to ensuring the Federal government meets its special trust responsibility to the Native Hawaiian community. From working to fund programs for the betterment of education, housing, and health care for the Native Hawaiian community, to fighting back against those who want to end these programs in their entirety, Mazie has been tireless in her advocacy. Recently, Mazie worked to ensure that Native Hawaiian survivors of domestic violence are eligible to access federal programs created to address domestic violence in Alaska Native and American Indian communities. Mazie is always mindful of achieving parity for the Native Hawaiian community and has used her assignments to the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee to continue working toward that parity in the small business arena. Mazie has raised issues impacting the Native Hawaiian community with various Secretaries, Attorneys General, and others to ensure that the federal government never loses sight of its responsibility to and relationship with Native Hawaiians.
